Our assortment of Japanese teaware comes from small clayworking studios in Japan. We have quite a few different types of teaware, and each of which can serve a different need. Although we work with talented potters, we still like to test drive each piece of teaware out ourselves before we put it on the website. These Japanese tea set accessories are constantly being tested out by the Nio Team to make sure they work well for all sorts of different tea types.

Japanese teaware for Matcha

When it comes to matcha or powdered tea, you need a few more japanese tea accessories like the chasen, chashaku, chawan and maybe even a whisk holder.

  • Chasen

    The bamboo whisk is the one of most famous japanese green tea accessories. This whisk is made out of a single piece of bamboo, and even though it has been used for hundreds of years in the tea ceremony, still nothing can compare to it when it comes to whisking up beautiful foamy bowls of matcha.

  • Chashaku

    This bamboo tea spoon is one of the least talked about Japanese green tea accessories, but it is important nonetheless. This spoon has a more vertical design, which makes it easier to scoop out of cylindrical containers like the matcha tin as well as the tea caddy or natsume.

  • Chawan

    The Chawan is a simple yet effective piece of Japanese teaware. This clay bowl is designed to provide the best space for preparing matcha tea. The first thing you’ll notice is the more cylindrical design. The provides more space towards the bottom for whisking, but also has steeper sides to prevent the tea from spilling.

    Whisk holder

    The whisk holder is one of the Japanese tea set accessories that is not strictly necessary. It is nice to help maintain the shape of your tea whisk when you are not using it. After you are done making your bowl of matcha tea, simply whisk off your matcha whisk and place it on the whisk holder. This will keep the bristles far apart, which is a more optimal shape for matcha whisking.

Japanese teaware for loose leaf teas

For the more common types of loose leaf tea, all you need is a teapot, specifically a kyusu teapot.

    For the more common teas like hojicha, sencha, genmaicha etc. that are infused into water, the best piece of Japanese teaware you can have is the kyusu teapot. The kyusu is a beautiful piece of Japanese teaware with a built in filter and hollowed out side handle. The wide base of the teapot allows the leaves plenty of space to expand and release their flavor into the water. How to use our Japanese Tea Accessories

There are a few small things to know when using these Japanese tea accessories. Let’s just cover a brief users guide so that you can get the most out of your Japanese teaware.

  • Kyusu

    Simply put 5 grams of loose leaf tea into the kyusu, pour in 150ml of water and let it sit undisturbed for the desired brewing time. When the brewing time is up, you can pour out the tea and the built in filter will automatically filter out the leaves so that they don’t end up in your cup.

  • Chasen

    Once the powder and water has been combined, you will want to use the whisk to scrape off the sides and bottom of the tea bowl and then you can begin to whisk the tea. The technique may take some time to practice, but just start by focusing on rapid wrist movements in a zigzag motions. After a practicing for awhile, you should be able to make beautiful, foamy bowls of matcha in seconds.

    Chawan

    The tea bowl is quite easy to use, just make sure to preheat it before hand so that you can keep your matcha warm for a longer time. This can be done by pouring hot water into the bowl, letting it sit for 1 minute and then pouring it out. This can be a simple and relaxing part of your morning matcha routine, and actually adds to the contemplative nature of the matcha preparation.

Order issues

While things usually are sent out quickly and efficiently from our E.U and U.S distribution centers, there are some delays due to customs, holiday traffic and weather. We can provide you with tracking information when you order so you’ll know where your tea is at all times!

Returns & Refunds

While returns are very rare at Nio, they occasionally do occur. We want everyone to be satisfied with the tea they get, so we would prefer to offer a replacement tea rather than leave someone with a tea they don’t like. Please be sure to reach out to us and we can solve whatever issues you might have with the tea you ordered.
